  • Grainger Market

The Grainger Market is Newcastle’s oldest retail asset which opened in 1835. It is located in the historic Grainger Town area of the city. TGA had a multidisciplinary appointment and are part of a design team led by Faulkner Brown Architects.

    Project Summary

The construction of the Grainger Market began in 1834 and was formally opened a year later. It is a working Grade I listed building and unique retail space. It is a large spacious building with little room for modern building services.

TGA Specialist Lighting were engaged to provide a new, feature internal lighting scheme throughout the alleys and arcade; as well as introducing internal and external lighting to each of the entrances in this city centre Grade l listed market.

This formed part of an overall refresh; relighting the market as part of a general reordering and overhaul of the building and the surrounding public realm to improve its use and visibility.

TGA were also appointed as Mechanical and Electrical Consulting Engineers for this project, providing services in the refurbished landlord’s spaces and the introduction of two new pavilions within the Arcade, to suit the ever-evolving needs of this asset.

The site also benefits from a reordering to the city scape with major improvements occurring on Nelson Street and Clayton Street.

The new lighting strategy in the entrances and the Arcade brings a new sense of atmosphere to the Market whilst remaining sympathetic to the building’s heritage. Emphasizing the buildings scale and height and highlighting the beauty of its fabric. The existing lanterns in the Alleys have also been incorporated into the new Casambi lighting control network.

The project has achieved handover of this phase of work in 2026.
