Following on from the success of the presentation to the Architectural and Interior Design students, on Thursday 31st March, TGA’s David Warwick and Andy Tan provided a guest lecture to the Northumbria University Mechanical and Construction Engineering Department Students on ‘How Mechanical Engineers can contribute to the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme?’.
The presentation highlighted the process to decarbonise an existing building, with a focus on the key considerations and contribution required from a Mechanical Engineer and how this feeds into, and aligns with, TGA’s Net Zero Carbon 10 Point Plan.
The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme provides grants for public sector bodies to fund heat decarbonisation and energy efficiency measures for existing buildings. Decarbonisation of Public Sector estates requires expertise across multiple disciplines including the client team, architects, building services engineers, structural engineers and project managers and quantity surveyors.. The decarbonisation of an existing building needs an integrated design approach to design, deliver, and maintain projects to achieve a sustainable, zero-carbon future.
Jess Tindall, Senior Lecturer, Department of Mechanical and Construction Engineering, Northumbria University said “Students from Northumbria University’s Mechanical and Construction Engineering Department really appreciated David and Andy sharing their experiences from a couple of local projects. Many of the students were keen to learn how Building Information Modelling can be useful for driving improvements in building energy performance, but left the talk understanding that a wider range of skills and inputs are necessary, especially when dealing with decarbonisation refurbishment projects. Many good questions were asked by the students indicating their interest in the topic and engagement with the presentation. Thank you to you both for your time and efforts putting this presentation together.”
