  • Grainger Market

The Grainger Market is Newcastle’s oldest retail asset which opened in 1835. It is located in the historic Grainger Town area of the city. TGA have a multidisciplinary appointment and are part of a design team led by Faulkner Brown Architects.

    Project Summary

The construction of the Grainger Market began in 1834 and was formally opened a year later. It is a working Grade I listed building and unique retail space. It is a large spacious building with little room for modern building services.

TGA were engaged to provide specialist lighting elements both internally and externally as part of an overall refresh; relighting the market as part of a general reordering and overhaul of the building and the surrounding public realm to improve its use and visibility.

TGA are also appointed as Mechanical and Electrical Consulting Engineers, supported by TGA’s Building Performance team to improve comfort within the market alleys and arcade.

The prominent listed façade is to be illuminated to enhance the cityscape and night-time vista. This is to match in with a reordering to the city scape with major improvements occurring on Nelson Street and Clayton Street.

The new lighting strategy brings a new sense of atmosphere to the Market whilst remaining sympathetic to the building’s heritage. Emphasizing the buildings scale and height and highlighting the beauty of its fabric.

The project is due to complete at the latter end of 2024.
