TGA’s involvement at Auckland Palace has included the conservation and refurbishment of the Grade I Listed Castle, the new Auckland Tower, a new Energy Centre and site-wide services infrastructure, the Mining Art Gallery, a major extension providing enhanced museum facilities and works to the surrounding gardens.
The projects required careful integration of modern services within highly sensitive historic environments, protecting the building fabric and important architectural qualities.
Particular challenges included limited plant space, restricted access and the need to provide appropriate environmental conditions for valuable artefacts within an historic building setting.
TGA developed a range of environmental strategies to suit the differing requirements across the estate. Areas displaying significant collections required close environmental control, while other spaces adopted less intrusive approaches aligned with the principles of the Bizot Green Protocol, reducing energy demand and minimising intervention.
TGA maintained continuity of the project team throughout the programme, supporting effective collaboration with the client, design team and contractors.
The project demonstrates TGA’s ability to deliver sustainable, conservation-led engineering solutions within complex historic estates, balancing operational requirements, collection protection and the preservation of heritage significance.
