Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens

The Sunderland Museum and Winter Garden is a Grade II listed structure in the centre of Sunderland. Originally the Winter Garden was constructed to resemble the Crystal Palace but it was badly damaged in 1941 with the current garden constructed in 2001. TGA are delivering the design of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Services for this major refurbishment, as well as providing Specialist Lighting Design Services. In addition, our Building Performance Team is working closely with our client and the wider design team to identify means by which energy use within the building, and associated carbon emissions, can be minimised in accordance with Sunderland City Council’s Low Carbon Action Plan.

We previously worked with the same team to develop concept proposals on the basis of which the Museum has been awarded a development grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The intention is that the project will replace the existing plant and infrastructure to support the remodelling proposals. The  Our Building Performance Team has worked closely with the Architect to evaluate building fabric improvements and by our M&E engineers to integrate appropriate servicing technologies including low temperature heating systems and air source heat pumps operating in a bi-valent configuration.

New M&E services will support new interactive galleries and exhibition accommodation providing environmental conditioning and ultra modern Bluetooth wireless lighting controls systems.

Our Specialist Lighting team have prepared new feature lighting through the remodelled areas included a lighting centrepiece to the central stairwell that reflects Sunderland’s glass making history and heritage.
