  • Sunderland Royal Pharmacy Refurbishment

The project comprises the relocation of the Outpatients Pharmacy, Reception and Waiting Area in Sunderland Hospital. The works were phased to allow the existing Pharmacy to remain live whilst the new Pharmacy was constructed. Phase 3 has been completed.

    Project Summary

The greatest challenge during this project was to keep all the departments existing services live for patients and staff whilst the work was underway. This meant that the work had to be completed over several phases in order to retain the pharmacy, parking eye, self check in and reception areas. Existing walls were removed that meant the relocation of Fire alarm and intruder panels.

The distribution boards serving the area were fully populated and required replacing with larger modern DB’s with sufficient ways for new circuits and spare capacity for any further works. The DB’s had to be replaced out of hours to ensure the departments were unaffected during normal working hours.

The project provides a much bigger, brighter area for patients to collect their medications, with a new waiting area set up just inside the entrance to Chester Wing.

It also includes a self-cleaning robot which has been installed to help the team deliver around 60,000 prescriptions each year and up to 300 patients every day. The pharmacy space also has its own walk-in refrigeration room.

The new reception area provides an improved environment for both patients and staff with a user-friendly self-check in area.
