TGA worked as conservation building services engineers with with Purcell Architects on this project who acted as Project Architects as well as fulfilling the role of Cathedral Architect.
In an earlier project TGA assisted in the appointment of a specialist lighting designer with whom we subsequently worked to develop the lighting proposals as well as their controls, scene setting facilities and the electrical infrastructure needed to drive them.
TGA are currently working on a £5m HLF funded project, Common Ground in Sacred Spaces, which is intended to renew the aged heating installation to the Nave, to provide new interpretation facilities within the Cathedral, to refurbish parts of the connected Cathedral Hall so as to improve access and to remodel external spaces to the south and east sides of the Cathedral to encourage use by the public, enabling events such as markets and open air theatre to be supported.
It is proposed to introduce underfloor heating in the nave of the Cathedral Church as the building is almost continually in use and thus can benefit from a relatively slow responding heating system which is able to maintain comfortable conditions throughout the space, efficiently and with little impact on aesthetics. Such an approach is also beneficial to the preservation of the porous historic building fabric.
The heating system will utilise air source heat pumps, along with conventional gas fired boilers, to supply heat, efficiently, to the new installation.
The CGISS project is currently approaching the end of RIBA Stage 4.
TGA have also been separately engaged to provide specialist lighting design input into the replacement and enhancement of the lighting installation within the Cathedral Church taking advantage of recent progress in LED lighting technologies and wireless lighting controls, whilst retaining physical infrastructure installed in earlier projects. The new lighting system will be installed as part of the CGISS project.
