TGA Consulting Engineers LLP have recently completed the £2m Investigation and Intervention Unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital and are into the final phases of the £750k Pharmacy Refurbishment, as well as recently completing Phase 1 of the £6.2m Maternity Department Refurbishment and we will be imminently commencing the Phase 2 works. The purpose of these projects is to upgrade the departments/wards to comply with current standards, provide an improved working environment for the staff and an improved experience and comfort for the patients.
TGA secured the works at Sunderland Royal Hospital due to Emma Marshall‘s, Healthcare Lead strong working relationship with the Architects and client which has spanned several years and projects which showcased the experience we have and what we could offer.
In the last 2 years TGA have significantly grown their Healthcare sector, the healthcare team have significant experience in this sector and have worked for the majority of Trusts across the North East as well as further afield in Lincolnshire and Northern Ireland. This experience makes us experts in these types of projects and we have excellent relationships with the Trusts we work with which have been built up over years of working together.
As with all refurbishment works there are challenges, especially in healthcare work where you are working within a live hospital environment and trying to minimise any disruption to patients and staff or any downtime of the provision of services, therefore careful coordination was required to ensure the disruption was minimal. At Sunderland Royal Hospital a significant challenge was ensuring sufficient power was available in the level 02 plant room to cater for the new Air Handling Units with DX cooling. Extensive surveys and discussions took place with the Trust estates team to find a suitable switchboard to provide the power and a workable cable route from the ground floor all the way up to the level 02 plant room, this ensured ongoing services to the department.
Healthcare work is a growing part of TGA’s workload, due to this we are growing our team internally by undertaking a significant amount of in-house training to support TGA’s target of a 25% increase in healthcare work. This is being assisted by Mike Dunlavy and Ed McNaught who have joined us recently and have considerable expertise in this field.
Other healthcare projects TGA have secured include South Tyneside District Hospital Theatre Air Handling Unit Replacement and the refurbishment of Ward 8. TGA have also been appointed on several schemes at University Hospital of North Tees which are currently ongoing.
