Refectory Hall

Following the success of the new lighting installations at St Nicholas Cathedral in the centre of Newcastle, TGA were engaged to provide new lighting designs to the adjacent Refectory Hall.

Project Summary

The Refectory Hall at St Nicholas Cathedral in an extension to the Cathedral building and was constucted in 1926. Today it houses the Cathedral’s food and drink outlet, Café 16 ran by the Oswin Project, a charitable foundation and also operates as a hirable flexible space. The main challege was working in a multi-purpose space and also working within the confines of a historic Grade 1 listed building.

The Hall was provided with new track mounted lighting to minimise fixing and penetrations into the historic building fabric. From these positions, the space is gently illuminated to provide a flexible solution to reflect the Hall’s multiple uses.

One of the key features of the space is the intricate painted ceiling. Utilising uplighters with an exceptionally high colour rendering index shows the structure off at its very best.

Other features including subtle illumination to the punch window details, combined with a wireless Bluetooth control system, facilitates the Hall to be tuned to an endless number of aesthetic and general settings.

During the construction of the Learning and Teaching Centre (LTC) TGA were engaged to complete the Construction, design and installation information on behalf the M&E contractor. Their involvement from an early stage enabled the building model to be developed with actual manufacturers information, which provided detailed installation information.

The flexible approach delivered by TGA enabled builders work holes in structural elements to be detailed very early in the programme, which had cost and programme benefits.

A Level 2 BIM model was required for the project, with TGA being very proactive in developing this and guided the site team and other team members with the delivery of their respective elements.

TGA helped to provide a very technically demanding building successfully, which incorporated complex MEP, Architectural and Structural co-ordination.
