Finstown and Dounreay Substations

The £900M Orkney-Caithness 220kV Subsea Link is a key part of Transmission’s £20bn ‘Pathway to 2030’ investment programme. This project includes the creation of two new substations on either side of the subsea link between Finstown and Dounreay West, delivered by a Siemens and BAM joint venture for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks.

Project Summary

The project involves the construction of nine equipment halls housing transmission equipment and four control buildings across the sites, with a combined floor area of over 30,000m2.

TGA have provided the design of the building services for both sites – ensuring that the electrical and HVAC systems meet the demands of a challenging marine environment as well as providing overheating assessments and ventilation for the equipment halls to ensure space temperatures do not exceed equipment temperature limits for the 50-year life cycle of the plant.

The site has been fully designed and delivered using BIM 4D scheduling with the design and site teams. The images from the site real time camera have been overlaid with the site 3D model to show the design against reality.

During the construction of the Learning and Teaching Centre (LTC) TGA were engaged to complete the Construction, design and installation information on behalf the M&E contractor. Their involvement from an early stage enabled the building model to be developed with actual manufacturers information, which provided detailed installation information.

The flexible approach delivered by TGA enabled builders work holes in structural elements to be detailed very early in the programme, which had cost and programme benefits.

A Level 2 BIM model was required for the project, with TGA being very proactive in developing this and guided the site team and other team members with the delivery of their respective elements.

TGA helped to provide a very technically demanding building successfully, which incorporated complex MEP, Architectural and Structural co-ordination.
