Redcar Town Deal
TGA were appointed as M&E and Specialist Lighting Consultant on this public realm project. Working with Southern Green Landscape Architects, to upgrade and improve an existing pedestrianised High Street. The purpose of the scheme was to create a more vibrant High Street that could be used for multi-purpose events.
Project Summary
The focus of the works was on the High Street that runs through the centre of the town. The High Street is bookended with the newer modern Blue Town Clock to the East and the Grade II listed King Edward VII Memorial Clock Tower to the West.
The works included the removal of the existing antiquated lighting columns and completely relighting the High Street utilising modern multi-headed projector lanterns. These multi-headed fixtures have been carefully aimed to provide a uniform lighting level throughout the High Street resulting in a bright and even night-time environment.
Large custom designed planters were installed along the street in key locations each provided with an uplighter carefully aimed to illuminate the foliage and tree canopy. King Edward VII Memorial Clock Tower is now carefully bathed in light from ground level , to enable light to gently cascade up the tower showing intricate features and details.
The High Street has also been designed with markets and events in mind with large in-ground power units located at key positions along the street. These pop-up units offer a flexible solution to providing power the length of the High Street with a variety of connections to suit individual needs and requirements. Non-potable water infrastructure has also been installed to provide street cleaning and water points for ease of maintenance and access.
The project was challenging and needed to be carefully phased so as not to disrupt the local businesses and access requirements.
A sister project featuring a new Event Space and Anchor Building is currently underway adjacent to the High Street with TGA once again working closely with Southern Green to provide a continued aesthetic and design language. This project is due to complete in 2027.
