Sunderland Royal Hospital – Oral Pharmacy
TGA were engaged by South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust to work as part of the design team on the refurbishment of the existing Pharmacy facilities at Sunderland Royal Hospital, delivering upgraded clinical and support spaces to improve patient experience and support the provision of specialist oral chemotherapy services.
Project Summary
The project comprised the refurbishment of two areas within the existing Pharmacy building at Sunderland Royal Hospital, delivered over two phases to minimise disruption to live hospital operations. The aim was to modernise facilities, improve patient flow, and provide specialist spaces to support the delivery of oral chemotherapy services.
We were responsible for the full MEP design and coordination across both phases. Phase 1 delivered a new seminar room, medical store, and night safe for the secure storage of pharmacy drugs. Phase 2 created a dedicated oral chemotherapy dispensary, patient waiting area, seminar room, interview room, consultation room, and formulary pharmacist room. New Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery systems were provided throughout the refurbished areas of both phases, alongside updated heating, domestic services, and drainage. Electrically, we proposed new lighting layouts, fire alarm extensions, and upgraded security systems to suit the revised layouts and clinical requirements.
A key challenge was delivering the works within an operational hospital environment. Phased delivery and close coordination with stakeholders ensured continuity of pharmacy services while maintaining safety and compliance.
Targeted comfort cooling was introduced within the dispensary, waiting area, and seminar room, developed in collaboration with our BP team to ensure user comfort in high-occupancy clinical spaces.
The project successfully delivered modern, compliant pharmacy facilities, and we have continued to support the Trust on further schemes since completion.
