  • Hitachi Phase 2

TGA Consulting Engineers were engaged directly by Hitachi Rail Europe, following the successful handover of their new Assembly Plant in Newton Aycliffe, to work on Phase 2 of the project.

    Project Summary

Building on a strong relationship with Hitachi Rail Europe, TGA were appointed to develop the M&E Design information for the second phase of works at the Newton Aycliffe site in Durham.

Working as part of a wider professional team, TGA developed the mechanical and electrical engineering services associated with:

    • The fit out of Test Line 1, previously left as a shell, to increase the test capacity of the site by 50% and to enable rolling stock of different designs to be accommodated.
    • The provision of new mezzanine office facilities formed within the double height void above the existing office areas.

Phase 2 was an £8m scheme to adapt the base build facility in order to provide additional services that Hitachi had identified since it was originally constructed.

In addition to the modifications to the main building, TGA undertook design development associated with the Western Shed and Postproduction Building.

The new Western Shed was provided to enable individual carriages to be withdrawn from the assembly / fit out process for separate attention if / when required and the Post Production Building is a temporary building enclosing two lines. This building allows post production works to be carried out to completed carriages.
