TGA Consulting Engineers LLP were appointed to undertake the Mechanical & Electrical Services design development for the major modification and extension to the existing Grammar School Building.

    Project Summary

The former Grammar School was first opened in 1614 and has seen numerous changes since then, with this being a significant development for the School.

The project provided a significant new build extension to the existing Grade II Listed building and was funded by Durham County Council. The construction value was in the region of £6.1m, with the M&E value being approximately £1.8m.

The new build section included General Teaching, Science, Food Tech, Music and Workshop spaces located across 3 storeys and centred around a large glazed atrium area.

The project also included a new kitchen, servery and dining area for the students, which was incorporated into the new atrium area.

TGA worked closely with the School and their key stakeholders, including the Head Teacher and IT Manager, with a particular emphasis on internal classroom layouts and associated services to ensure that correct smart-board / interactive AV equipment positioning, telephony point provision and wireless coverage was achieved.

Innovative technologies and approaches were included in the scheme, such as an assisted natural ventilation solution utilising bespoke ventilation ‘stacks’ that incorporated small fan units to maintain internal environmental conditions during summer and winter periods.

Further low and zero carbon technologies were provided, including a roof mounted photo-voltaic array.
