TGA Consulting Engineers have worked numerous times on this project. We were first engaged as Mechanical and Electrical Consulting Engineers for the design of M&E services associated with a £6.5m new build extension facility at the existing production facility in Peterlee, Sunderland.
Project Summary
The production facility doubles the current production capacity with the addition of this 4,500m2 extension.
Due to the production processes to be undertaken, the new facility required a positively pressurised ventilation system to achieve near clean room conditions to prevent potential contaminants from entering the assembly areas.
TGA developed design information through to and including the technical design, using 3D coordination on this early BIM Level 2 scheme.
The 46m clear span production hall allows complete flexibility for the provision of future production lines.
The new facility also includes office space, staff canteen area, laboratory spaces and ancillary rooms.
The extension was procured through Willmott Dixon Construction SCAPE Major Works Framework on behalf of the tenant TRW Automotive (now operating as ZF).
As part of a wider investment by the Client, TGA were engaged to develop the M&E design information for the improvement scheme within the existing facility. This improvement scheme centred around major M&E / production plant replacement in an effort to drive for improved efficiencies and to provide better working conditions for the production team. This included the introduction of new ceilings, glazed screens and a clear target for an improved air permeability rate.
TGA worked closely with the Client on both projects, developing the specific design brief for both aspects of the works. This also included working alongside two separate main contractors (Willmott Dixon and Key Property Solutions) as well as their M&E Contractors to ensure the projects delivered on the Clients aspirations.
TGA Consulting Engineers were then again engaged as Mechanical and Electrical Consulting Engineers for the design of M&E services associated with a £4m extension to the existing factory facility.
We were then furthermore commissioned for a £1.5m refurbishment of the existing factory space.
TGA worked closely with two separate main contractors (Willmott Dixon and Bowmer and Kirkland who delivered the extension and the refurbishment works respectively) as well as with their specialist M&E sub-contractors.
The factory units are used to manufacture and assemble high quality electronic and electro-mechanical components for the automotive industry and need to be positively pressurised to attain near clean room conditions in order to prevent potential contaminants from entering the assembly areas.
TGA developed stage D proposals using Revit to coordinate the mechanical and electrical services with the proposals with those of the architect and structural engineer.
