Finsbury Estate
Finsbury Estate is an inner city municipal housing estate located in the Islington area of London and was constructed in the late 1960’s. Central heating services are delivered to the homes and community by an ageing community heating system.
Project Summary
Islington Council has initiated a renewal project for upgrading central heating services serving the estate and TGA Consulting Engineers LLP have been appointed to provide professional services through all design and construction stages.
The estate is served by an existing central heating boiler plant installation located in a roof top plant room. A number of community heating sub-stations are located in strategic positions around the estate and distribution pipelines routed around the estate, links the boiler house installation with sub-stations and individual dwellings.
An options study, which examined the lifecycle consequences relating to 14 individual replacement options, has been undertaken by TGA Consulting Engineers LLP as a preliminary activity.
TGA have developed proposals for the new community heating system which will be compatible with importing heat derived from the municipal heat network.
The preferred option includes replacement of the roof level boiler plant with new high efficiency equipment located in a new, ground level energy centre complex. New installations include the following:-
-install new high efficiency condensing boiler plant
-new boiler flues fixed to an external façade of Michael Cliffe House and terminated above roof level
-new primary and secondary circulating pumps, pipe distribution systems and plate heat exchanger units
-BEMS
-new heating circuit pipe work, heat emitters and controls in the individual dwellings
-new indirect hot water cylinders.
